How Hydrotherapy helped Billie the horse who suffers from navicular syndrome

Billie suffers from navicular syndrome (inflammation/degeneration of the navicular bone and surrounding tissues, usually involving the front feet).

The outcome in most cases is not good, and often means eventual euthanization to put the animal out of its constant pain.

Equine hydrotherapy, conducted in a large tub or by hosing, is an all-natural cold salt water lower leg treatment for issues such as injury, lamitis (a disease of the hoof) or navicular syndrome, among others.

Billie has shown remarkable progress in the year that Lisa has owned and been treating the gelding.

"His gait is a lot longer than it used to be when we first had him assessed," she says, "and the beauty of the hydrotherapy is that it's drug-free so we don't have to give him Bute (an analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication) for the swelling."

"Biggles had received treatment for a dislocated hip some eight months earlier, and I thought his stiffness was a result of that injury.
