Billie suffers from navicular syndrome (inflammation/degeneration of the navicular bone and surrounding tissues, usually involving the front feet).

The outcome in most cases is not good, and often means eventual euthanization to put the animal out of its constant pain.

Equine hydrotherapy, conducted in a large tub or by hosing, is an all-natural cold salt water lower leg treatment for issues such as injury, lamitis (a disease of the hoof) or navicular syndrome, among others.

Billie has shown remarkable progress in the year that Lisa has owned and been treating the gelding.

"His gait is a lot longer than it used to be when we first had him assessed," she says, "and the beauty of the hydrotherapy is that it's drug-free so we don't have to give him Bute (an analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication) for the swelling."

for osteoarthritis pain, acupuncture, animal chiropractic and
physiotherapy....

Over
time he developed arthritis in his knee joints,” she said. “That
contributed to the fact that he was overweight and it also put a lot of
stress and strain on his knees.
As it progressed, he ruptured his
ACL (anterior cruciate ligaments),” Downing added. “He tore both of
them; it’s quite common in dogs. He kind of just shuffled around like
an old man, only he’s 9 years old. He also has a lot of back pain and
is very weak in his rear legs.”

The story of Oz, a 13 year old Jack Russel with a bad back:

Chiropractors offer treatments to pets as alternative to using drugs

By MCKENZIE CASSIDY

"Sue Gorman, Oz's owner, said her dog was not acting like himself for a long time, seeming sedated and arching his back when he ran around the house.

She could tell that Oz's back was giving him trouble when he could not catch a snake, and he has "always been a hunter," Gorman said. Being 91 years old, in human years, and slightly overweight contributed to a degeneration of the discs in Oz's lower back.

Oz received two other treatments May 13 and 20 and, according to Scoma, Wednesday's would be his last. After his treatment, Oz circled the room seemingly refreshed and with a youthful excitement."

"researchers used acupuncture on a 14-year-old cat with disc disease. The cat showed significant improvements in posture and mobility four months after starting acupuncture. The regime involved weekly visits at first, which were later reduced to every other week. After this brief round of treatments, the feline patient was walking and running again....

Disc disease is only one condition in cats that acupuncture can help. Others include kidney conditions, autoimmune disorders, allergies, hip dysplasia, arthritis and certain musculoskeletal problems, along with some emotional issues. In most cases, acupuncture is used in conjunction with other treatments....

Dr. Van Engelenburg has seen cats that were given only a few months to live yet survived several more years after acupuncture treatments. As he says, "This noninvasive procedure could improve the quality of life for your cat and perhaps help it live longer.""

"Twelve years ago, Swenson became terribly ill: his equilibrium was off and he would start spinning in circles uncontrollably before lying down. His local vet was treating him symptomatically to try to get him well enough to travel to the hospital. Alison slept at the barn every night, watching over him. Her veterinarian warned that if he began violently seizuring, he would have to be euthanized. During this time, Alison’s father began to give him Reiki treatments. In about a month, his balance had returned to him and he was able to travel to the hospital. The vets who examined him there couldn’t believe it was the same horse that had been so sick in the weeks before the visit. He was so well in fact, they told Alison she could begin bringing him back to work."

In fact, she has grown to be bigger than the other older Koi in the same tank! "
