Animal Massage
for Cats, Dogs, Horses (Equines), Rabbits and Other Pets
by Gina McCulloch D.C., IVCA, IEBWA
What is it?
Massage for cats, dogs, horses (equines) and other animals is the therapeutic use of touch to restore the soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues) in your pets body to their optimum state.
It is a non-invasive technique that can provide substantial pain relief and aid the rehabilitation process, promoting healing. The strokes applied to your pet’s soft tissues can be used to relax and soothe your pet or invigorate their muscles prior to competition, increasing performance, quality of gait and stamina.
It is often referred to as an alternative, integrative, complementary, natural and / or holistic medicine for cats, dogs, horses (equines) rabbits and other animals and pets.
How does it work?
Massage therapists for animals apply pressure or vibration to the soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues) of your pet’s body.
Stronger pressure may be used to work deep tissues or a lighter touch to release physical and emotional blockages. It is usually done by hand, but mechanical apparatus may also be used.
Massage can relieve pain and discomfort in your pet (e.g. cat, dog, horse, rabbit etc.) as it releases endorphins (the body’s natural pain killers). As pain can cause behavioural problems, you may see a positive change in your pet’s disposition.
