Animal Cranio Sacral Therapy
for Cats, Dogs, Horses (Equines), Rabbits and Other Pets
by Gina McCulloch D.C., IVCA, IEBWA
What is it?
Cranio Sacral Therapy (CST) or cranial osteopathy for cats, dogs, horses (equines) and other animals is a very subtle, gentle, non invasive holistic therapy for your pet.
Using their hands practitioners gently realign the bones in the skull & base of the spine to release tension and harmonise the central nervous system. Treatments are very relaxing and beneficial to pets as they facilitate the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
It is often referred to as an alternative, integrative, complementary, natural and / or holistic medicine for cats, dogs, horses (equines) rabbits and other animals and pets.
How does it work?
The cranial sacral system of your pet is made up of the cranium (bones of the skull), the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord and the sacrum (at base of spine).
There are various rhythms and pulses within your pet’s body that influence their physical and psychological health. Rhythm irregularities can indicate a health problem (e.g. abnormal breathing can mean respiratory problems; an abnormal pulse can mean cardiovascular problems).
Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST) practitioners work with the rhythm and pulse of the cranial sacral system by very gently moving the bones of the cranium and the sacrum to remove any tension or torques. Using their hands to regulate this pulse and release restrictions improves the function of the central nervous system, helping facilitate your pet’s (e.g. cat, dog, horse, rabbit etc.) natural ability to heal themselves.
